German metallers Colors of Autumn are about to release their debut album “Against the Throne” and on this occasion, they happily answered a few questions for us. Learn more about this upcoming record in the following interview!
Hello Colors of Autumn. Thanks for your time! Would you mind introducing your band to our readers?
Hey Valentine! Colors of Autumn consists of Jens, Georgi, Phil, Fernando and me, Markus. We are a German Modern Metal / Metalcore Band that has been founded in 2014 in the City “Worms”. Yes that’s the real name!
We like to see ourselves as storytellers and that’s what we do in our music and lyrics. We tell stories about seafarers, the end of the world or even just a band that misses the road! If you like the sound of Parkway Drive or Killswitch Engage you will find a home at our music.
Your debut album “Against the Throne” will be out beginning of November. How long have you worked on this release and what kind of songs can your fans expect?
Against The Throne is the result of almost 10 years of work and we took waaaay too long to release our first album. Actually, we have to thank covid for that, since we had the necessary time because of it.
The album contains older songs like “Storm” or “The City” for which we spend a lot of time to rework them into our modern sound and also a lot of new songs like “Brave” or the title track “Against The Throne” that really have the vibe and sound of a modern Colors of Autumn song. You can tell we are beyond excited to finally push it out to the world.
How would you describe your writing process for this album and how do you split the roles between the different band members?
Most of the time Jens, our rhythm guitarist, comes up with an idea and gives it a raw structure. Afterwards, we work it out in the rehearsal together and Jens and I figure out the lyrics along this journey. But talking about our album, the song “My Mirror” is completely based on an idea of our lead guitarist Phil and our drummer Fernando. So, we really don’t care who comes up with an idea. We are just happy to have something new to work on.
While waiting for the record to be out, you have unveiled a lyric video for your single “Storm”. Could you please elaborate the themes explored in this song?
When you see the lyric video which we released for “Storm” you might wonder that you don’t see a single storm in the video. That is because we used the single release to announce our Album, including cover art, name and release date.
The song itself is telling a story of a crew of seafarers heading out to sea on the search of adventure and treasure. But the ocean had different plans for them, so they face a huge storm, which not more than only one crew member survives.
Who’s the artist behind the artwork of your album and what were the main inspirations for the visual?
For the album art, single designs and new merch designs we worked with an amazing czech company called All4Band Design. We gave them a few hints on the vibe we wanted to archive with each design and they did an insanely good job in putting it together! The Album Art, which you also see in the “Storm” lyric video is based on the story of “Against The Throne”. So, you can get an idea of what the song is about.
I noticed on your website and your socials that you are offering a lot of merch. As a band and as music fans, what’s your favorite merch item and why?
As many of you know, Merch is the most direct way to support an artist you love. This is why we decided to offer a variety of different merch, that has been extended now with our preorder packages for Against The Throne! Most important for us is that we create merchandise that we like as well, so we are happy with every item. But for me personally… I adore the new “Brave” Shirt in White.
