In a maelstrom of polyrhythmic guitars, radical lyrics and agitated beats, Veil of Maya offers us its sixth album, “False Idol“, out on Sumerian Records. This time, it’s a captivating concept that is carried by the quartet – Marc Okubo (guitar), Sam Applebaum (drums), Danny Hauser (bass), and Lukas Magyar (vocal).
“The whole album is told in the first person“, explains Lukas. “We follow this character, who is not necessarily the most pleasant man there is. But he’s going up the ladder of power… You just have to listen and see how it ends. It’s pretty dark.”
“It was like making a movie or a series“, adds Marc. “Lukas had a storyboard in mind from the beginning; it’s like composing the soundtrack.”
“Working in two separate studios at the same time was a new approach for us“, says Marc. “Before, we used to record all the instruments so that Lukas could absorb them. This time, we were composing with his voice in mind. Another novelty is that he wrote everything on the spot, right now. It brings a whole new energy. Max was also very important in the process.”
“And for good reason: each element is now amplified. Veil of Maya’s music is heavier, more hypnotic, more powerful. The sound of this album is also darker“, says Lukas. “With this story, our attitude is more grim; it’s something nobody really expected.”
The first single,”Overthrow”, could well be the new favourite track of all the fans of the band, which raises its level a little more: “He has a bit of’ Mikasa’ in him“, smiled Marc. “We figured it wouldn’t hurt!”
“However, we wanted to create something new“, says Lukas. “We don’t recycle old recipes. It’s a fresh start.”
