Modern metal trio, Pteroglyph, has recently dropped a new album titled “Solaire” via Blood Blast. Vocalist Jimmy MacGregor was kind enough to answer a couple of questions linked to this release. Check out the full interview below!
Hello Pteroglyph, thanks for your time. Would it be possible to introduce your band to our readers, as well as your roles in it?
Hello! Thanks for having us! We are Pteroglyph we are a three-piece technical death metal band from Leeds in the UK. We like to play fast aggressive metal music that is relentless and punishing!
We consist of Jimmy MacGregor (vocals/guitar/lead songwriter). Ansley Prothero (guitars) and Bradie Nixon (drums).
With a worldwide pandemic going on, how have you handled the management of your band over the past few months?
Unfortunately, due to Covid, we have been unable to play any live shows since March. But we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to work on the release of our new album which we’ve been planning for a while. To accompany this, we moved into working on live streams and as filming as many videos or playthroughs as we can! We’ve been plugging the album pretty consistently, so it’s kept us pretty busy. We’re just trying to roll with the times and do the best we can in a pretty tricky situation!
You’ve recently released your album, “Solaire”. How long have you worked on this record?
We started working on the tracks in 2018. Once we were tight and together in a practice room, we spent a large majority of 2018/19 touring and playing around the UK, honing in on our sound. And getting the tracks as ready as possible, before taking them into the studio in late 2019. It’s taken a little while to get them together and we’ve been sat on them for a while, but it feels worth it for the end result!
Is there one song that, according to you, best reflects the overall spirit of this album?
The title-track ‘Solaire’ probably sums up the vibe and sets the scene for the rest of the album right from the get-go. It’s fast paced, aggressive and doesn’t let up. It sets a precedent for the rest of the album with increasing ferocity and power right to the end!
Any funny stories to share from your recording or writing sessions?
Basically, any time Jimmy has to explain and teach the songs to the other guys in the band, it’s pretty hilarious. It usually consists of various percussive noises followed by the insistence that every section of every song is in 4/4 timing. It’s exhausting, it’s time consuming but we get there eventually!
Can we talk about the process of creating the artwork of your album and the overall idea behind this visual?
The artwork was created by an Icelandic artist at Rainsong Design. It’s grim, dramatic and kind of beautiful in a horrific way. It draws some similarities from the Japanese manga film Akira, which the song themes draw a lot of influence from. As soon as we saw it, it really brought the album together and gave the whole process an identity!
The last words are for you. If you have a message to convey, here’s your chance!
Listen to the new album now! If you like your metal fast, aggressive and dangerous then you’ll love it!
Punishing, expansive and packed full of riffs. We’ve got a bunch of music videos and playthroughs online from the new album, so come check us out across all social media platforms and stay very metal!
Thanks for your time!
